Dear friends,
For the last three Sundays I have been preaching about the benefits of a stable balanced family life. Here are three great suggestions from my homilies: “Slow down and relax,” “Make Sunday a quiet family day,” and “Reduce your spending.”
I commend our families for working so hard to balance their work life and their family life. This is difficult in our part of the world where everything is so expensive and both parents need to work full-time just to make ends meet.
The busyness of our lives makes it challenging for families to spend quality time together and excessive work demands can lead to stress and lack of sleep. In addition, the surrounding culture is urging us to buy more and more things, even when we cannot afford them.
In this setting it takes courage to maintain a healthy family lifestyle. Sometimes we will need to say “no” to certain activities and purchases. Keeping Sunday as a special day dedicated to worship, quiet time, sleep and socializing with family and friends, can feel like a sacrifice.
None of this is easy and perhaps we cannot embrace it all at once. Nonetheless, we will find it beneficial if we are able to make some good choices around the family lifestyle. Our relationships will be stronger, our days will be less stressful and we will be able to avoid recurring exhaustion.
Let us ask God to assist us with living stable and balanced lives.
